DampRid is a non-toxic inorganic mineral salt named Calcium Chloride. As with all other household chemicals, DampRid should be kept in areas out of reach. DampRid does not emit any type of fume, gas or vapor of any kind.
DampRid’s white calcium chloride crystals absorb excess moisture in the air, bringing humidity to an ideal and safe level of about 50 percent humidity. Once the optimal level is reached DampRid slows down, and will restart when necessary. Without excess moisture, mold and mildew will not grow.
DampRid is composed of calcium chloride, which is a type of salt product. Because of its salt properties, as it begins to absorb moisture it begins to swell thus becoming a hard solid mass. The salt is acting like a sponge pulling the water from the air and trapping it in the upper portion of the basket. When the upper basket has completely solidified and has absorbed as much moisture as possible, it will begin releasing the water to the lower chamber of the product.
The absorption of excess moisture and the solidification of the salt crystals depend on the amount of relative humidity that is present. Mildew and mold require moisture to grow. The optimal range for growth is 70-90% relative humidity. When the relative humidity is below 62% mold does not grow. This product is chemically designed not to dry the air to a level that damages plants, animals, or clothing. Once the relative humidity drops below 60%, the calcium chloride becomes dormant, slows down and will restart again when necessary. This is designed to be cost efficient for the consumer because the product works when it should and not when it does not have to.
If the DampRid is hard it will soon release the water to the bottom container. Please be patient and water will start forming below. Sometimes this will take up to a month, sometime longer, depending on how much moisture is in the air If the DampRid is hard it is absorbing moisture an in time it will release it to the bottom container.
The calcium chloride may at times feel “mushy” before it drains because the weight of the liquid at the point of dispersement could not immediately overcome the center crease (in the hanging bags) or just at the drain slits (in the refillable container). (In the hanging bag) This is caused by the bag folding process during packaging. When the bag absorbs more moisture, the weight of the liquid should be enough to open the drainage point on its own. (In the refillable container), this may be caused by the hardened crystal formation that occurs occasionally due to humidity/temperature changes. This may cause the drain slits to become temporarily blocked. Allowing the product to continue absorbing without disturbance will allow the crystal formation to dissolve and allow proper drain flow. Thus the calcium chloride will harden and dissolve as usual.
DampRid is a salt product. If the absorbed moisture comes in contact with metal for a long period of time, the metal will corrode. Similarly, the product can absorb the moisture in leather, leaving it hard and wrinkled.
No, the DampRid diluted liquid is safe for your pipes and is septic safe. We recommend that you flush the liquid down the toilet, first raising the seat before pouring.
Use a wet/dry vacuum or towel to absorb as much of the liquid as you can. Continue to pour regular tap water onto the spill to dilute the concentration of the liquid. If you don’t dilute or clean the spot, the spilled liquid will continue to absorb excess moisture and the spot may get larger.
No, there is nothing wrong with the DampRid or your home. The rusty colored liquid comes from trace mineral deposits that are found in calcium chloride. It may not turn rust colored in every batch but it is normal if it does happen.
Discoloration may occur because of some impurities in the manufacturing process of the white crystals. Also, as they absorb excess moisture, the crystals also pull any dust particles in the excess moisture into the Refillable Moisture Absorber.
DampRid is water soluble. To dispose of the DampRid crystals or the fluid contained in the bottom chamber, simply flush down a toilet, first raising the seat.
This depends upon how much dampness is present and this can vary by location. Since the presence of musty odors indicates a mildew/dampness problem exists, we suggest you add a DampRid container to the problems area every few days until the musty odors disappears. You will have then found the correct number of DampRid containers to use. Check the package for suggested size of room for each individual product.
