Dehumidifiers in-home Use

Moisture in your home can be a problem when there is either too much or too little. Why do we want to remove humidity to our homes and what is humidity? Humidity is the amount of moisture or water vapor in the air. People tend to feel more comfortable when the relative humidity is within a certain range (between 35-55 percent). High levels of humidity can cause a room to feel stuffy and can also create an environment in which biological contaminants can thrive. High levels of moisture can also affect your home by causing wood to rot and condensation to form on windows. Moisture is often added or removed from indoor air to make a room feel more comfortable.

Moisture can enter the home in many ways. Outside sources include the soil, surface water and outside air. Breathing and perspiration by you and your family are a major source of moisture. So is showering, bathing, drying clothes, washing dishes and cooking. Most homes have more than one source of moisture. A little prevention can keep excess moisture out of your home. Identify moisture sources in your home and try to correct them. A dehumidifier can be used to help control the humidity in your home.

The best way to approach any problem is to first do the things that are easy and low cost.  Then proceed in a logical order doing the next least costly technique with the most positive likely result.  With excess moisture problems, the best approach is almost always to remove or control the moisture.

Listed below are a few reasons why DampRid is the easiest, safest, most economical, and environmentally friendly way to prevent damage caused by excess moisture.

  • If you set the electrical dehumidifier’s humidistat too high (low humidity) the unit may run continuously, which is usually unnecessary and actually not very helpful.  Most houses need at least some humidity—for example, to keep woodwork from drying out too much and to control static electricity.  Also, extreme dryness is often uncomfortable for people.

NOTE: DampRid does not have any controls to worry about, unlike an electrical dehumidifier.

  • Many electrical dehumidifiers are outfitted with an electrostatic filter, which needs to be cleaned or replaced at least twice a year.

NOTE: DampRid does not require a filter, unlike an electrical dehumidifier.

  • If the temperature becomes fairly cool in the area you have your dehumidifier—say 60 degrees Fahrenheit or lower—the dehumidifier coils may ice up.

NOTE: DampRid will work in sub-zero temperatures.

  • If you ever turn an electrical dehumidifier off, wait at least 10 minutes before turning it on again.  This lets the pressure in the refrigeration system equalize.

NOTE: DampRid does not have an on/off button.  When excess moisture is present DampRid is on.  When no excess moisture exists the DampRid is off.  DampRid does not have any buttons or switches, unlike an electrical dehumidifier.

  • Electrical dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity—similar to the amount consumed by a small air conditioner.

NOTE: DampRid does not require electricity, unlike an electrical dehumidifier.

DampRid does not require any electricity, nor does it have any moving parts, filter, or humidistat.  You can easily move each DampRid product from room to room.  DampRid was designed for small, enclosed spaces where electrical dehumidifiers are not practical.  Once the DampRid has removed the excess moisture from the air it traps the moisture in the bottom of the product and prevents the absorbed moisture from re-evaporating back into the air.  DampRid will work in sub-zero temperatures and will absorb over 125% of its weight in moisture.

Nothing turns a hot day more oppressive than high humidity.  In rooms that don’t really merit an air conditioner, or to cut down on the use of an air conditioner, simply try one of our non-electric moisture absorbing products to make living more bearable.
